What banks do Russians know?

As part of its "Regular Rating Series", The National Agency for Financial Studies (NAFI) undertook a survey on the recognition of different Russian banks: spontaneous name recognition and recognition with a prompt.

The ranking of banks has almost not changed during the last six months. Like in the past, Sberbank is the best known bank among the Russian population. Eighty-four percent of the Russians mention this bank spontaneously and within the list of several banks 99% - recognised Sberbank immediately. Sberbank has for many years been one of the most popular banks among the Russians.

The second most recognised bank is VTB 24 (23% of the respondents recalled it immediately and 68% identified this bank from a list of several banks). The recognition of VTB 24 bank has increased slightly (from 63% in April to 68% in October, 2009), leaving behind Russian Standard Bank which was the second most recognised bank six months ago.

The third place is now shared by Russian Standard Bank and Alfa-Bank (13% and 12% respectively in the spontaneous rating, 62% and 60% - in the prompted rating). Alfa-Bank's recognition has remained unchanged since April 2009, and the position of Russian Standard Bank has slightly declined, especially in terms of instant name recognition (from 17% in April to 13% in October 2009).

The other banks included in Top-6 of leading popular banks (spontaneous name recognition) are: Rosbank (9%) and Uralsib (7%). In the prompted rating the other two Top-6 banks are Gazprombank (53%) and Uralsib Bank (44%).

All-Russian representative samples were conducted in November 2007, October 2008, April and October 2009. 1600 respondents were interviewed at 140 sampling points in 42 regions of Russia. The sampling error does not exceed 3.4%.
